Kinderkirk Purple Room

The Purple Room children are the oldest children of the school. They have more refined play. Their block building and manipulative play is more advanced, often requiring more than one member for problem solving. Materials are readily available for playing board games and creating special projects. Dictating stories about art work is part of the curriculum.

A large corner of the room is designed for quiet book reading and puzzle challenges. Rug time involves stories, open ended questions, songs, sharing and prayer. Leaders for the week are chosen at rug time. Small group activities include working with concepts such as matching, seriation, cause and effect, opposites and so forth. Curriculum is planned but flexible, in case a child or teacher brings in a new thought or item to school that day.

Clean up is an important part of the morning, as children get ready for snack and outside time. Outside time, as well as being free for choice making, is also a time to play group games, work with the parachute and/or jump rope. This room also has an inclusion component. For every two children in the inclusion program there is a well trained teacher. The Red and the Purple Room have four children each in the morning and the afternoon. The Inclusion Program, which is run through the Santa Barbara County Education, is a wonderful extension to our own program.

The Purple Room is the Room that contains the nap program and the afternoon activities. At least twice a week the afternoon children go on walking fieldtrips. Some of the places they go are Farmer's Market and the play yard at Main School. The morning and afternoon children have a garden outside their room for flowers and vegetables.
